Total Loss Vs Repair Fri, 02 April 2004 23:04 Go to next message
I had an accident with my Audi 90S which caused my transmission to go useless. I am trying to get a rebuild transmission. Insurance company apprisal says that change the transmission with a used one (2400$ value) and a rebuilt one will cost me 4500$ . The car's blue book value is Max:6200 and Min: 3100. I had invested some money recently changing timnig belt etc. I would like to know what are my rights for getting the parts I want. If insurance company gets stiff then what are the options to talk them out. (and asap as without car life is hell Sad )
Thanks for any advice !

Thanks,

KVD

2000 Camry Wed, 20 October 2004 04:00 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I own a 2000 Camry LE and in 4 1/2 years I never had a problem with it. One week ago it shut down on me. I had it towed to a local dealer and it turned out to be that the water pump seized which caused the timing belt to shred. It was covered in full under the powertrain warranty. Only 2 days later the car shuts down on me again. I have it towed to the same dealership. It turns they needed 3 1/2 hours to diagnose that a crank shaft position sensor was bad and the total job came to $650.00 of which $81.00 was for the part. Do you think the dealership may have caused a problem with the crank shaft position center by not properly installing the timing belt or are the 2 problems totally unrelated? I just find it odd that the car broke down 2 days after the timing belt problem occurred and that the timing belt hooks up to the crank shaft. However, I do not want to go back to the dealership and complain of faulty workmanship if the 2 problems have no bearing on each other. Thanks

New online supplies site for Canadian shops Sat, 20 February 2010 00:36 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone from Canada know there is a new website available for discount shop supplies.

The sites address is http://www.autobodydirect.ca
I will be continuing to add more and more stuff as time progresses, but in the mean time I wanted to get a bit of feedback as far as how my pricing is in comparison to the Jobber's you are currently using. My goal is to create a site where everyone can gain access to the discounted pricing that the big shops get.

Everything is priced in canadian dollars, and shipping will be billed at ACTUAL price.

Payment is done thru paypal (they accept visa/mc etc.) to keep everything nice and safe for the buyer.

Please any feedback would be awesome... I have been working hard at this.

Tom.

yikes, I hit a column of my carport and apparently hooked the left front panel while attempting to remove the car from the carport structure...so now that front panel is dented inwards which prevents the drive door from opening more than a few inches...could anyone give me an idea of what fixing this would cost????

Estimating seminars???????????? Tue, 21 October 2003 20:58 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I was thinking of training for estimators and I wondered what everyones thoughts were on estimating classes for new estimators as well as someone who has been in the business for years. What should someone look for in an instructor or company who provides such services and what topics should be concentrated on. I have seen advertisements for several differant seminar type classes but they are expensive, and I would like to get other view points on this subject. What qustions should be asked when contacting these instructors?

Hello all, NKOB here, looking for some tender lovin help. Laughing
Windshield had cracked and I thought this the source of my wet floor after rain and or snowmelt. Pro installer and great rep told me he doesn't think this was source of leak as this had never been replaced, the seal was intact. Mentioned to me that 92 era chev Lumina Euro's sedan model were prone to seam leaks. First Q is where would I look for these seams? IE, under cowl? I can see no apparent seems underhood. Leak is both sides left/rt corners interior. Back of hood seal seems good and never wet in eng compartment. Appreciate some guidance, thanks: dave

I was looking at these omni clears. I know the mc161 has been out a long time, and I've read good things about it, but the new mc261 is dust free 10 times faster, and I'm I'm hearing really good things about it in local shops. mc161 shows 60-80 minutes dust free and mc261 is dust free in ten minutes. Is anyone out there using these clears, and if so, what do you think?

Reading through some other forums, I saw several posts from users who said that these two primers are identical in spray, performance and sanding. Some of these higher end shops said they had switched to the mp, because they have not found a difference. Has anyone used both of these primers quite a bit? Let me know what's up on this.

I like to read through the want ads on this site from time to time. What makes me laugh is the ads that have alot of misspelling errors or just make no sense out of the job description. Why would a competent tech want to work for some one that can't even write a good want ad? Especially when there is a spell checker on this site. Laughing

1/4 panel replacement on 1984 corvette Thu, 28 July 2005 18:56 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone that has replaced a left 1/4 panel on a 1984 corvette could give me some tips on removal? What is the easiest way to get the old 1/4 off? It's just the 1/4 not the rear body section. Also how do you prep rear body before installing the new 1/4? What kind and brand of adhesive do you use to install the new 1/4 panel? Any tips & tricks that will help me out on this repair will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Wayne

Painting with Nitrogen Sat, 11 February 2006 18:50 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Ok , not sure who first mentioned painting with Nitrogen ,
AC / Tag ? but , it
peaked my interest . I asked this guy ,who knows his stuff

http://www.sullivansequipment.com/specials/index.php

He got me some info on this system

http://www.derivair.com/index2.htm

Sounds cool I think he said $30K plus , Their is a bit more info ,
but try getting it in English , which begs the question ,
1 - Why would Italian's be any more advanced technically in our field than say ,USA ?
2 - How are their tecks/ Owners compensated ?
3-Are their Insurance company's better ?

Anyway we have a bit of Canada and USA represented on this board ,
Any other Country's ?

NITROTHEMSPRAY SYSTEM

The Eurosider Derivair system replaces the tradidtional fluid carrier
of filterd compressed air with a nitrogen-rich stream < up to 99.5#> that is clean . dry and deionised , Nitrogen is anhydrous and inert, and because the nitrogen produced is also
deionised, this system eliminates the problems associated with moisture and static electricity

The temperature of the nitrogen carrier <+41.F ++176 .F> can be regulated according to the working conditions . by heating the nitrogen we reduce the viscosity of the paint and the need for solvents

With NITROTHEMSPRAY each coat adhears to the surface being sprayed rapidly and without altering the properties of the paint, Sages, runs, drips and 'orange peel' or pitting effect become a thing of the past.

In several products tested the results show

- 100 % Control of delivery
- Up to 50% reduction of solvents
- Minimum 40% increase in production
- Minimum 30% elimination of paint solids modelling

I just started at a shop that has one of these, the last place I worked had a Car-o-tronic. I liked the car-o-tronic a lot better. It seems like this thing just refuses to set up on certain cars and that measurments change somewhat at random.

anyone else use one of these? maybe you have some tips on making it work better. Maybe there is something wrong with this one. Kansas Jack still sells these now but call them something else. Thanks.

The Perfect Paint System Wed, 22 March 2006 03:09 Go to previous messageGo to next message
If you could combine all you're favorite features of each paint line you've used into one super system, what would you come up with?

Here's mine:

Sikkens wash primer(I just like it)
Sikkens color build primer(None of the different colors though)
Spies Hecker basecoat(best color match I've found)
Spies 8010 clear(good stuff. Looks great with flex added)
PPG Global 894(lays out great. A dummy like me can use it)
Dupont Sontara stuff for cleaning.

I'm still thinking about the other stuff I like, but so far this is it.

Also:
I like 3M Hookit II sandpaper. I hate Nortons finer grits.

3M Perfect It 3000 compounds. The best there is.

SEM aerosal etch. Good etch in a spray bomb

Microflex NitonONe Nitrile gloves. Protection of Nitrile with the feel of latex.

PPS cups. I'll never be able to switch back to the old way.

Spies 8110 ? Fri, 24 March 2006 02:01 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Just started back at a shop that is using Spies. I've been haveing a hard time getting it to lay out slick on top surfaces. I have an RP with a 1.2 tip in a Blowtherm set at 80 degrees. I've also tried a 2000 with 1.3 tip. I've used 2:1 and also 3:1 with the ??09 and ??15 hardener also with and without 10% medium reducer. What are you guys guns setup with and the mix ratios that works for you. I was using PPG 894 and 8150 at the previous shop which are a lot thinner, the spies seems thicker. The Spies doesn't seem to like the reducer, get more dye back.
Thanks

Hi Guys

I see a few refrences to trizac 3m's ultra fine sanding disc's on the forum.
Has anyone tried sia's velvet range p1000 grit through to p4000, no need for an interface pad a the disc is cushioned.

Just started using these dicsc on the dark colours i.e. black dark blue etc, used to get some problems with flatting marks after vehicle had sat out in the sun for a few hours or chemicals in car wash being to aggresive.

Start with 1000 disc and work it up to 4000 very easilly polished and no die back, must use the dics wet though or they dont cut. I useally submerge disc in bucket of water then squeeze excess water out and they work very well.

Cheaper than 3m's trizac discs as well and longer lasting.

I-CAR Aluminum welding test Sun, 20 August 2006 23:36 Go to previous messageGo to next message
I'm scheduled to take the I-CAR Aluminum welding test this fall and was wondering if anyone on this discussion board could give any input regarding the difficulty experienced compared to taking the I-CAR steel mig-welding test ( I've taken twice )and passed all welds the first time.

The welds are all similar but I've had only limited experience with aluminum welding...The shop just bought a Miller 350P steel/aluminum pulse mig with a spoolgun and it seems to weld much differently from the short-circuit spool gun mig that I've used a couple of times over the last few years.

Procedures and major differences in testing and how informitive were the mandatory two parts of the test( classroom/practice session ) before the actual test is what I'm looking for.
Thanks.........Paladin

Catalyzed acrylic enamel okay for the valve covers? Sun, 08 April 2007 01:12 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hey everyone!

I'm fixing up a Firebird Trans Am GTA and I'd like to repaint the original valve covers. I had some paint custom matched to the original OEM color about 2 years ago and I want to know if I can still use it.

The paint is Valspar SunCryl 'HS' (327 series) high solids acrylic enamel. I have the hardner as well.

If I use the hardner when I mix the paint, can I use it on the valve covers? Or, do I need to use high temp engine paint on them?

I was told as long as the paint is "catalyzed" (meaning using hardner?), it would be okay to use on engine related parts like the valve covers.

Thanks. Smile

Forgetting to pull up that stupid vent cap. It never fails,at least a couple of times a week , it happens.

Today, I was doing the front end of a Vette, going beautiful, one of those jobs where you're thinking "man , it doesn't get much better that this". Last coat of clear, after really laying it on the hood, I get to the last fender and realize " darn, I 'm not going to make it". I exit quickly, remember to close the darn think before I add a few more ounces of clear. Back in the booth and I start working my way down the fender. "What's going on? Why isn't it laying down? Did I forget to reduce my clear? Is my tip clogged?" none of the above, I just forgot to open that darn vent cap again! By now I've lost my wet edge, I start at the top of the fender and pray that the overspray will just melt into that perfect hood, I hope that my double coat on the fender won't cause a sag.

I wish they'd paint those darn things bright red!

UV hand held lights--Interview Opportunity Mon, 23 April 2007 18:19 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hello,

I am conducting research on UV light spot curing in the automotive repair/collision repair area.

I am looking for an "in the trenches" perspective on the use of UV light products in the paint curing process. I am specifically interested in learning about the various brands,
purchasing options, price, etc. If you have experience with any of the following brands of UV light products please email me at za_penny@yahoo.com to set up a time to talk.

American Ultra Violet
H&S
Honle
ProMotorCar

Thanks in advance for considering this request.

Does anyone have an opinion on either of these products?

I hear from some painters in CA that the 90 line works much better than what any of the other paint companies are offering.
I also hear that the R-M version (Onyx) is due to be realeased very soon.

I am looking at management systems. I would like input from shop owners and managers on systems they use. I want a system that will input directly from Pathways. It must track parts, labor, sublet vendors, cycle times, materials and allow for scheduling. It must also print graphs or charts that show profit margins by parts vendors, insurace company, etc.. and cycle times. Any input would be greatly accepted.

Just got done reading your article in the new BSB. Very thorough , a good read for all the preppers out there. I especially liked the points about finishing off your bodywork finer to avoid the sandscratch swelling , which should also include feathering out any 80 grit scratches put into the paint . I always like to show them what happens when the lazy prepper skips that step and tries to just fill those scratches in with primer. Duplicating seam sealer, getting the compound out of the jambs, swirls, you covered it all.

Look forward to the next one!

Comes with the lincoln 3 year warranty and had all brand new accessories.

For any painters in the Chicago area who might be looking for a side job, I ran into someone in the far western 'burbs looking to get his 'Vette painted.

No issues with the body. It's going to pretty much be a sand/scuff and shoot, but it is a color change (it's black now. He wants it to be red or yellow).

If you think you may be interested, PM me for details.

I've used this flatener a few times with a very low success rate. I have experienced the product drying or clumping in the gun, it would look like the bumper/panel was absolutely covered in dirt. Other times I experienced patches of shiny & matte areas. My rep just warrantied a job for me like that. He tells me their are constant problems with this product & doesn't recommend anyone buys it. I've switch to a glasurit clear & hardener that works beautifully so I'm not really in need of recommendations. I'm just curious why such a product exists and how other people have found it.

The Safeworker Story - A Healthier And Safer Future For Car Body Repairers

Within the European Union, more than 100,000 car body repair workers are directly exposed to the organic compound, styrene. Following a recent study, approximately 1,300 people a year who are exposed to styrene go on to develop health problems. The compound has been potentially linked to asthma, dermatitis and other indirect health issues.

Styrene, which is derived from petroleum and natural gas by-products, is widely used in the production of car repair materials such as bodyfiller.

In response to Styrene Reduction Directives, the European Union Framework 6 Programme commissioned a project with a grant of ¤1.3 million, aimed at removing the use of styrene in vehicle body fillers in order to improve conditions for workers in the car body repair industry. The project, involving participants from Denmark, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, was named SafeWorker.

For three years, the Safeworker consortium has been involved in researching and patenting a variety of bodyfiller materials which are hardened by exposure to ultra violet light; the most successful are now undergoing extensive laboratory and field trials prior to their launch.

The Safeworker products are not only intended to be more environmentally friendly and safer to use than conventional bodyfillers, they are also expected to reduce material wastage and shorten the time taken to repair a car. It is anticipated they will eventually replace the market for traditional bodyfillers.

Safeworker is a story of collaborative product research, development and testing across influential European organisations*. It is a compelling story that now unfolds on the website www.safeworkeruv.com

*Participating organisations include:

Auto & Miljø - (Denmark)
Confederación Española de Talleres de reparación de automóviles y afines - (Spain)
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Foerderung der angewandten Forschung ev - (Germany)
Glas-Craft (UK) Limited; (UK)
Impact Repair Centres Ltd; (UK)
Institute Pedro Nunes Associação para a Inovação em Ciência e Tecnologia; (Portugal)
Motorbranschens Riksförbund; (Sweden)
Movac Group Ltd; (UK)
Pera Innovation Ltd; (UK)
Proxima NTR – (Poland)
Retail Motor Industry Federation Ltd; (UK)
UVASol Ltd; (UK)

Project Objectives

Save 250,000 working hours per annum
Save medical associated costs for the EC of ¤50M per annum
Faster repair turnaround time
Increased equal employment opportunities
Commercialisation of developed technology can occur at any time after project start
Composite vehicle body filler material of comparable performance to existing products
A combined material and UV light application system that enables transmission of sufficient UV light energy from a lamp into a volume of UV curable filler.
Curable to a maximum depth of 3 mm in under 180 seconds
Reduce occupational asthma and dermatitis by 1250 workers per annum
Reduce styrene emissions by 13,800 kilograms per annum
Educate at least 20,000 SME end users in the harmful effects of styrene
Educate at least 20,000 SME end users in the benefits of styrene reduction

Ford Ranger Rocker replace HELP Wed, 18 November 2009 22:53 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Anybody ever do one of these ?? I have to replace the right rocker panel on an 08 Ranger that was t-boned.Looks pretty tangly,as it goes in under the "A" pillar, floor, and rear most pillar/cab corner. Both the front and rear pillars are damaged in the area where it meets the rocker.Sheet was written to repair this damage, not replace. If i was replacing the pillars it would be easier to get at the rocker underneath them.As it is,it will be hard enough to repair the damage on these pillars.Looks like i will have to cut a section out of both pillars to access the rocker underneath, then weld these damaged sections back in.
Anybody have any tricks for this one ???

HELP STARTING PAINT? Mon, 29 March 2010 05:11 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Hey guys. im a new member here from Detroit,MI. Im 22 and I have an 82 Cutlass Supreme Im going to start bodywork on very soon. After all thats done I plan to bc/cc it.I have a few questions in regard to the order of paint.
It now has acrylic enamel on it. Of course under that is a primer. Next under that is the original paint and primer, then bare metal.

The body is pretty straight with maybe 2 or 3 very small dings. Do I have to take the car down to bare metal? Can I start from the original primer/metal?

Thanks in advance

My kids got these packs of crayons at the santa clause parade. they must of had them left over from sending their adjusters to school. Laughing They had a state farm bear walking up and down and the people beside me had this dog that went besurk every time it came near..I guess its true they can sense evil. I wish I had my camera ready for that one.

long ago i asked for an inexpensive paint i can do myself in my garage with a HVLP. i primed it with duplicolor high build primer/surfacer, then their sealer. then sprayed it with ppg shopline........all together including the clear the PPG system was about 300 bucks. it turned out great although the color i used was semitransparent and took a lil more layering of basecoat than expected. i just need to wetsand it and buff it now- thanks for the recomendation-

Can anyone from CCC confirm or deny the rumors that Summit Software may be purchased by them.

A couple of customers are hoping that if a large company like CCC buys the product, they claim that it might fix there software and/or refund issues and would like to know for sure.

I read this article in my local newspaper last night. I hope It makes you laugh, like it did me. This is a true story. I'm going to condense the story abit,so it won't be as long as the whole article. I'm going to use the word bandit instead of the name of this person.

Store clerk sued by bandit he shot.

A convicted bandit has filed a lawsuit against the clerk who shot him as he was holding up a convenience store.

The bandit was wounded as he fled from the store. The clerk who shot the bandit told investigators the bandit claimed he had a gun in his jacket before demanding money from the cash register.

The clerk fired five gunshots as the bandit fled with the cash. Two bullets struck the robber's back and side.

The bandit was arrested in a home a few minutes after the holdup.

The bandit pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to four years in prison.

In the bandits lawsuit---filed recently in the court, the bandit alleged "there was no need for the use of deadly force" when the clerk fired the gunshots. The bandit claimed his victim acted maliciously ans sadistically, and fired the gun with the intent to inflict pain.....well duh Rolling Eyes

The bandit--who seeks unspecified damage's said the shooting had prevented him from transacting his business....I guess he means more robbing Razz

The robber also said that he continued to suffer nightmares as the result of this assault upon his life.

The court found no wrong doing in what the clerk did defending himself.

This person was convicted of robbing a pizza restaurant in 1991, and also has two prior convictions for burglary.

End of article.

This is just about as crazy as McDonald's being sued for making people fat.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Atleast no one was seriously injured.

Hope all have a great day.....It's Friday Smile

Tim

A shepherd was herding his flock in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of the dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Broni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leaned out the window and asked the shepherd, "If I tell you exactly how many sheep you have in your flock, will you give me one?"

The shepherd looked at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looked at his peacefully-grazing flock and calmly answered, "Sure."

The yuppie parked his car, whipped out his IBM Thinkpad and connected it to a cell phone, then he surfed to a NASA page on the internet where he called up a GPS satellite navigation system, scanned the area, and then opened up a database and an Excel spreadsheet with complex formulas. He sent an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, received a response. Finally, he prints out a 130 page report on his miniaturized printer then turns to the shepherd and says, "You have exactly 1586 sheep".

"That is correct; take one of the sheep" said the shepherd.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and bundle it into his car.

Then the shepherd says: "If I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my animal?"

"OK, why not," answered the young man.

"Clearly, you are a CONSULTANT", said the shepherd.

"That's correct," says the yuppie. "How did you know?"

"You turned up here although nobody called you. You want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you don't know BEANS about my business. Now, GIVE ME BACK MY DOG!"
